About Imago Relationship Therapy

Imago Relationship Therapy, created by Dr. Harville Hendrix and Dr. Helen LaKelly Hunt in 1980, is a form of relationship and couples therapy that focuses on transforming conflict into healing and growth through relational connection.

The Latin word “Imago” – meaning “image” – refers to the “unconscious image of familiar love” that is acquired in childhood and carried with us into adult relationships.  “We are born in relationship, we are wounded in relationship,” says Hendrix. “And we must heal in relationship.”

Imago is different from other forms of couples counseling in that it focuses on strengthening the relationship (the space between), instead of brokering compromises for the individual clients.  An Imago therapist coaches couples in the use of dialogues to equip them with the tools to repair their relationship and sustain a safe space between them where they can heal each other.
